Class Topic #2: Dealcatcher.com

It was interesting to listen to the business model for dealcatcher.com. I worked selling advertising to local businesses throughout the last year with The Campus Special and realize how hard it is to sell a company on a product like that. I think one of the main reasons they succeeded with their project is the type of advertising they are selling. By using the internet to its fullest ability, dealcatcher.com allows its advertisers to directly see the return on their investment. Without the proof of a return, sites like dealcatcher would not be successful. Advertising is always hit or miss, and I feel that this company has the ability to stay profitable through showing large name clients like DELL the true return that other advertising mediums (newspaper, tv) are not able to.

Wikipedia Change #8

Edited the Carbon Leaf page. Edits can be found throughout the paragraph starting with "July 2004 marked the release.." The way the paragraph was written provided wikipedia users with false information, stating that songs were currently ranked on the AAA charts when in fact they were not.

Wikipedia Change #7

Edited Domino's Pizza again. This was once again hard to edit because of its popularity. I added that Domino's was the first national pizza chain to sell chicken wings.

Wikipedia Change #6

I have added two additional awards which Gruvis Malt has won. They won "Best Electronica/DJ Act" in 2005 and 2006.

I edited Moorestown High School again. I added the addition of Kevin Kirkby's athletic accomplishments. I forgot to log in though, so my edit didn't show my user name.

Class Topic #1: Local Search

When going over class notes I stumbled upon the idea of local search and how google and yahoo are looking into this. I then went to google.com to see if they were already implementing some basic local search and I found some keywords that work for local search. I am from Moorestown, NJ so I used this as my local town to find information on. Here are some search terms which returned not websites but direct information.

"Moorestown NJ movie times"
"Moorestown NJ map"
"Moorestown NJ weather"
"Moorestown NJ food"

These are just a few examples of search terms which returned direct information. To expand on the "Moorestown NJ food" search, one can use google to find local businesses in their town by typing their town name followed by what type of business they are searching for. An example of this would be:

"Newark DE pizza"

which returns links for the locations of the local domino's, papa john's, and pizza hut. I feel that this new local search capability of google will slowly make the need for yellow pages obsolete, as I have not used a yellow pages since I have found this feature on google.
